Photo recap from a wild two weeks in the woods making art. Two weeks to myself, to my art practice, to my rest and health, and sitting with the eeriness of isolation like this. Will be processing this one for a while. 1. Trying to become a forest. 2. My very remote home away from home, the Lock Dam Cabin on Chamberlain Lake. Many artists, caretakers, naturalists, etc have stayed here and enjoyed the solitude. 3. My newest carvings, hung within the trees over decaying earth and industrial relics from over the years at Lock Dam. 4. Gordie, angry, after a dunk. 5. A miniature outdoor art walk. 6. A song for my dog, in the tune of T-Pains “Buy U a Drank,” about how he slept through every critter encounter but I love him anyways. 7. Solo canoe leaving Lock Dam and heading to Eagle Lake. 8. Appreciating negative space. 9. The best visitor, my momma. 10. Collaborative printing of fungi carvings with the rangers of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.

Throwback to a freehand mountain/sea scape mural I did for @willardbeachstudio and @brendacyr13, lover of all things sea and land. Featuring my sleepy assistant Gordie.
This photo of me in the weeds just came back from @northeastphotographic and was taken 5 years ago, right before beginning the install of my most impactful project to date. Collaborating with other artists, @meislandtrail and with support of @kindlingfund / @space538, Surface First Tilts West temporarily installed environmentally conscious, minimal impact works of art along the trails of Little Chebeague Island. Visitors were invited to interact with the natural and human history, while simultaneously viewing contemporary art. The installations’ relationship with the trails, historic landmarks and plants gave the audience a unique outdoor art experience. I’m holding words written by @jenny__oconnell, printed on a mesh banner. Jenny's writing installation in Surface First Tilts West can be read as one writer's walking journey through elements--both physical and felt--found on the island. Experimental in form, the work is a celebration of strong women, wild places, and joy found in such places explored. Fitting today, five years later. I. instructions Sit here in the dangling between time and breath, pulling in air with the knowledge you won’t always. We all leave of a heart attack, every last one of us, one thing we all have in common with everyone else. Drink from your bottle, remember you are water. Notice how wind and light catch the ocean and try, and fail, and try again to describe it. Feel the island collect underneath your fingernails. To know decay is to have once known life. When you leave take a rock in your pocket, run your thumb over the soft arc of it, remember who you are. Adventure called and you answered: you arrived by boat, by kayak, in your walking shoes, ready to be amazed. What you didn’t know is that the most powerful thing is this act itself, this quiet moment of yes, you, seated in the dangling now now now. Call it transition. Call it being exactly where you need to be.
